Published: June 14, 2017 by Stephanie Fox, Program Associate: Grants and Scholarships

The Johnson County Community Foundation (JCCF) awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship to two Johnson County students. Kathryn Purk and Hannah Reid will receive full tuition to the Indiana college or university of their choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Applicants were selected based on volunteer community service, academic preparation and performance, leadership and good character.

Purk is the daughter of Dave and Monica Purk and a recent graduate from Franklin Community High School. She plans to attend the University of Notre Dame to study Neuroscience in the fall. While at Franklin Community High School, Purk was captain of the women’s varsity tennis team, president of Harvard Model Congress and vice-president of the FCHS Business Professionals of America. She enjoyed volunteering at Rhythm and Reins Horse Therapy and Riley Children’s Hospital in her spare time.

Reid is the daughter of Michael and Rebekah Reid and a recent graduate from Whiteland Community High School. She plans to attend Purdue University to study Professional Flight in the fall. While at Whiteland Community High School, Reid was a member of the varsity soccer and track and field teams, a member of the WCHS Robotics team, and a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoyed volunteering with the Whiteland PEER Helpers and participated in several service trips through her church.

JCCF has administered the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program locally for 20 years. Each year, the 12-member scholarship committee invest a significant amount of time and thought into selecting these scholars. After the JCCF scholarship committee narrowed the field to the final nominees, the finalists’ names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the final approval of the nominees.

ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education.

The Johnson County Community Foundation is a nonprofit public charity established in 1991 to serve donors, award grants and provide leadership to improve Johnson County forever. For more information, call JCCF at 317-738-2213 or visit our website at www.jccf.org.
