Color the County Mural Program Comes to a Close with New $100,000 Public Art Endowment

Johnson County Community Foundation (JCCF) has officially completed its final Color the County mural, marking the conclusion of a decade-long program transformed public spaces throughout Johnson County.
The final mural was completed earlier this week on Hadwell Hardware in Trafalgar, bringing the Color the County Mural Program to a close.
The program began 10 years ago as part of JCCF’s 25th Anniversary celebration. Over the past decade, Color the County has connected local artists and community members through a collaborative mural-making process, resulting in impactful works of art that revitalize public spaces and strengthen neighborhood identity.
“Color the County has been such a meaningful part of our Foundation’s history,” said Kim Kasting, President & CEO of JCCF. “It has given local artists an opportunity to share their creativity while bringing community members together to create something they can enjoy for years to come. We’re incredibly proud of what this program has accomplished over the past 10 years.”
While the Color the County program has come to an end, JCCF is ensuring that public art continues to have a lasting presence in Johnson County.
Festival Country Indiana awarded JCCF a $50,000 grant, which the Foundation will match to establish a $100,000 endowment for murals and public art in Johnson County.
The endowment will be invested to provide annual grant support in perpetuity for the maintenance and preservation of existing public art and the development of new public art. It will also be used for enhancing community gathering spaces, celebrating local creativity, strengthening community identity, and attracting visitors and economic activity across Johnson County.
“The endowment allows us to build on the legacy of Color the County while creating opportunities for public art to continue evolving in Johnson County,” Kasting said. “We’re grateful to Festival Country Indiana for helping us establish a permanent resource that will support creativity, community connection and vibrant public spaces for generations to come.”
