Union Township Alumni Association Scholarship Fund – The Union Township Alumni Association formed in 1911 and established its scholarship program in 1986, 23 years after the consolidation of Union High School into Franklin Community Schools. It was established to perpetuate the remembrance of the Union Community, its history, and to promote the spirit of its rural ‘roots’ while recognizing the success of its graduates. The first scholarship was awarded in 1987 to a student who went on to obtain a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering.
The scholarship is awarded to a qualifying senior, maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or better, who resides in Union Township, Johnson County, IN and is planning to obtain a post-secondary education. The scholarship helps defray college expenses, with the funds to be used for tuition and/or books. Initially established in the amount of $500, the scholarship was increased to $1,000 in 2016.
The Union Community has been an integral part of Johnson County history since its pioneer beginnings and has remained a rural, basically farming community since that time. Beginning with the formation of 10 original school districts in the late 1800s, there has been a dedicated emphasis on schooling in Union Township with the first recognized high school graduate in 1891. Union Elementary School continues in the tradition of dedication to education, not only in academia, but also in the continued stewardship of its country heritage.
