Pat Van Valer’s legacy to Johnson County

Published: June 27, 2023 by Johnson County Community Foundation

Pat K. Van Valer, 79, who passed away on March 9, 2023, was no stranger to the heart of Johnson County, as a long time Greenwood resident and a dedicated philanthropist. Pat was proud to serve his hometown by working in the Trust Department for the National Bank of Greenwood, Merchants Bank and National City Bank. He then went on to own Landes Costume Company and Van Valer Heating & Cooling.

Pat was committed to giving back to the community and served countless hours as a volunteer. He was a Greenwood Chamber of Commerce board member, serving a term as its president. He served many terms with JCCF as board member, president and various advisory positions. Pat had a special place in his heart for the Washington Jefferson Williams Fund, the Orchard School, and the Greenwood Public Library. Philanthropy and volunteerism were a priority for Pat, and his kindness was often described as infectious. He will be remembered as a loving father and caring citizen of Johnson County who touched many lives.

Members of our community grieve and celebrate Pat’s life and speak about him in remembrance as “a kind and generous person with a huge smile and wonderful laugh. Pat touched and helped so many people. Everywhere he went, people knew and loved him. He loved Greenwood and was always so optimistic.”

Pat’s legacy is one that will live on through stories of his life and through the legacy fund that he created at JCCF. Pat’s planned giving legacy fund will extend his message of service beyond his lifetime. Pat was and will continue to be a valued philanthropist and friend of Johnson County.

Planned giving set up today will pass on more than just possessions to posterity. Consider setting up a legacy fund like Pat. This community will become a better place through legacy gifts. JCCF extends sincere condolences to the Van Valer Family.
