Stories of Connection – Frances Melton

Published: April 14, 2013 by Johnson County Community Foundation

Mary “Frances” Melton had a vision for her community.

She lived her whole life in the house in Franklin where she was born and was devoted to a variety of local causes. Frances Melton passed away on October 23, 2012, but her legacy will live on through the fund she established with the Johnson County Community Foundation. From the Frances Melton Memorial Fund, four beneficiaries will receive annual distributions: First Presbyterian Church of Franklin; Indiana Masonic Home of Franklin; Riley Children’s Hospital; and the Franklin City Fire Department.

Frances Melton had a long and interesting life. She was a 1939 graduate of Franklin High School. Among other things, in 1947 she was elected Johnson County Recorder, later elected Clerk of the Courts for Johnson County and held each position for eight years. Frances was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Franklin and a 50-year member of the Franklin Chapter 439 of Order of the Eastern Star. She was a woman of distinction.
